QUINCY –  It wasn’t that the New England region Babe Ruth champions didn’t want to spend a day off in and around the host city.    The team from Norwalk, Conn., would just like to have been in a better mood.
It’ll be easier for Norwalk to enjoy the area, now that the long wait for its first win in the Babe Ruth 14-year-old World Series is over. After falling in its opener on Saturday to Youngstown, Ohio, Norwalk came from behind Monday night at Adams field to defeat Eastern Massachusetts champion Cambridge, 7-6.

“There’s a lot of relief,” said Norwalk manager Marc Kohler. “You don’t want to go home 0-4. I think this win will relax the kids a lot more.”

Third baseman Kevin Daniele seemed pretty relaxed all night. Though his team was in an 0-2 hole before it even came to bat, he evened things with a two-run homer to left in the bottom of the first inning. Norwalk was on the wrong end of a 6-5 score entering the bottom of the sixth, but after Alex Petridis scored Bryan Daniello (who had tripled) to make it 6-6, then moved to second on a wild pitch, Daniele tagged a single to right that delivered the winning run.

“I enjoy those situations,” Daniele said. “I like coming through. It had been a little frustrating, because I got pitched around after my first at-bat, but I got a good pitch (in the sixth) and was able to put it in play.”

Cambridge, which snapped a 5-5 tie on Kevin Luciano’s RBI single in the top of the fourth, fell to 0-3 in pool play. It tries to break through Tuesday night against the Pacific Northwest champions from Skagit Valley, Wash.; Norwalk had a 2:30 date Tuesday with 2-0 Nederland, Texas, the Southwest region representative.
