QUINCY – If anybody was wondering where Tallahassee’s offense went during its stunning loss to host team Quincy on Saturday night, it was located Sunday afternoon at Adams Field.
The 14-year-old Floridians, who won the 13-year-old Babe Ruth World Series last summer in Loudoun Valley, Va., exploded with a nine-run fourth inning en route to a 17-4 victory over Palo Alto, Calif.
“We hit much better and came out with a much better approach today,” Tallahassee manager Mike Harrison said, “We let the ball travel and tried to hit the ball to right-center field.”
Palo Alto scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Freddy Avis hit a run-scoring single and Tucker Jorgensen reached base on an error that scored two runs.
The Pacific Southwest Regional champions got another run in the bottom of the second when center fielder B.J. Boyd hit a deep sacrifice fly, scoring teammate Drake Swezey from third.
Player of the game Garrett Johnson was responsible for four of the team’s RBI, which included a three-run double with the bases loaded during Tallahassee’s rally in the fourth. It was a crushing blow to right-center field which put the game out of reach for Palo-Alto. Johnson also hit a run-scoring single during Tallahassee’s four-run first inning.
“I was just seeing the ball well,” Johnson said, “My other teammates got on base for me and I just drove them in.”
Payson Smith also had a big game for Tallahassee, delivering a three-run double during the team’s four-run rally in the top of the third.
Harrison said he was happy with the way his team came out to play Sunday and is confident the loss to Quincy will not hurt their chances for success at this year’s tournament.
