Braintree Babe Ruth stars shineTwo of Braintree’s three Babe Ruth youth baseball all-star squads are moving on to the state championships.

In a double-elimination tournament that began June 28, the 13-year-old Braintree boys went a perfect 5-0, beating Weymouth, Marshfield and Quincy once each and adding a pair of wins over Hingham/Hull en route to a District 4 title.

Their second win over Hingham/Hull, 2-0 on Wednesday, was the clincher, propelling Braintree to states, which begins July 18 in South Boston.

The 15-year-olds started strong as well, defeating Quincy before beating Tri-Town and Weymouth to put them in the championship round.

Facing a desperate Marshfield team that needed two victories to stay alive, Braintree fell 14-2 in their first contest, but captured the District 4 title by winning the rematch, 5-3, on Thursday night.

It was close to a clean sweep for Braintree, but the 14-year-olds fell to defending champion Weymouth in the final.

The 15-year-olds’ state appearance will also begin in Lynn on July 18.
